| A sign describing how some shore birds fly when they leave the nest, while others jump into the water. | 6/29/2008 |
| Looking back at Cape Kiwanda from the south. | 6/29/2008 |
| We drove home along the Three Capes Loop, and stopped at Cape Meares. While it was in the upper 90's at home, here at Cape Meares we had all out outerwear on and were still cold. It was probably in the upper 50's, with a strong wind and a light rain/mist that made it feel particualrily cold. I'd still prefer this to the temepratures we were having back in the Portland area. | 6/29/2008 |
| Some downed trees near the Octopus Tree. We had a fierce winter storm last winter, that blew down thousands of trees along the coast. You can also see the effect of the wind and salt blowing off the ocean in the trees still standing, it looks like they are leaning away from the ocean. | 6/29/2008 |
| The tracks of Mazama running back to his master on a beautiful day at Cape Kiwanda. | 6/29/2008 |
| While on the beach, we saw what we first thought was a barracuda washed up on the shore. It was alive, but struggling to survive. And we were having a hard time believing that barracudas were this far north. | 6/29/2008 |
| We found out after we got home that there have been Lancetfish washing up on shore this year, and that's what this was. This one was close to two feet long, with many sharp teeth that made us wary of getting near him. | 6/29/2008 |
| Some people tried to help it back into the water. They briefly succeeded before the next wave deposited the lancetfish right back on shore. Shortly after that he died from apparent exhaustion. He seemed close to death from the moment we found him. | 6/29/2008 |
| A close-up of the lens for the Cape Meares lighthouse. | 6/29/2008 |
| The lighthouse at Cape Meares. | 6/29/2008 |
| Mazama licking the sand off his face while he anxiously awaite for someone to throw a ball or frisbee. | 6/29/2008 |
| The famous Octopus Tree at Cape Meares | 6/29/2008 |
| Here's a better shot of the Octopus Tree. You get a better sense of how large it is here. | 6/29/2008 |
| Mazama running back to us with his soccer ball in his mouth. you can see Cape Kiwanda in the background. | 6/29/2008 |
| He's almost back to us, readyto return the soccer ball and chase it down the beach once again. | 6/29/2008 |
| A surfer along the beach at Cape Kiwanda. It was just a week after this that there was an accident between a surfer and a dory here and young surfer lost his arm. | 6/29/2008 |

| The main lobby at Five Pine Lodge. They have a wine reception each afternoon in front of a huge fireplace. | 1/1/2008 |
| Mazama in the car ready for our return tip back home. It's always tough to end a vacation and head back home. | 1/1/2008 |
| The parking lot near the cabins at the Five Pine Lodge. | 1/1/2008 |
| The snow covered highway on our way back home. Several times later in January this road was closed due to avalanches. | 1/1/2008 |
| Another shot of the snow piled up on the mountain pass. | 1/1/2008 |
| The snow fell quite heavily one day. Here it is falling outside our cabin. | 12/30/2007 |
| The front view of our cabin at Five Pine Lodge. | 12/30/2007 |
| Looking from our cabin out into the snow in the back of the property. | 12/30/2007 |
| Looking down the row of cabins at the Five Pine Lodge, along the sidewalk. Yes, there really is a sidewalk there! | 12/30/2007 |
| A fence just beyond our cabin. | 12/30/2007 |
| Here's Mazama returning to our cabin with a snowball in his mouth. | 12/30/2007 |
| Looking down on Mazama in the snow. | 12/30/2007 |
| Adam and Mazma running through the woods outside our cabin. This show is vaguely reminiscent of that famous photo of Bigfoot. | 12/30/2007 |
| We met a great artist in Sisters - Jennifer Lake. She told us she had one of her paintings in the Dechutes Brewery in Bend, where we were planning to have dinner. So we got a shot of Adam next to her work. | 12/31/2007 |
| Adam and Mazama on the snowshoe trail. | 12/31/2007 |
| Here's Jennifer Lake's painting without Adam obstructing the scene. She has several "series" of paintings, all of which are quite detailed and beautiful. | 12/31/2007 |
| The cabins at Five Pine Lodge all lit up at night. | 12/31/2007 |
| Mazama patiently waiting for us on the path while we were snowshoeing. | 12/31/2007 |
| This is the Christmas lights decorating the Conference Center at Five Pine Lodge. It looked remarkably like a mushroom. | 12/31/2007 |
| A bright sunny day while we were snowshoeing up near Paulina Lake. | 12/31/2007 |
| Here's some of the heavy snow we were hiking through. | 12/31/2007 |
| Looking through the trees at one of the Cascade mountains. It could be Mt. Bachelor. | 12/31/2007 |
| Our spa in our cabin filled up from a faucet in the ceiling. Actually it wasn't even a faucet, it was just a hole in the ceiling. | 12/31/2007 |
| A closeup of the water coming out of the ceiling to fill up the spa tub. | 12/31/2007 |
| You can really see the droplets of water filling up the tub in this shot. | 12/31/2007 |
| You can see the entire length of the flow in this photo. | 12/31/2007 |
| the tub is slowly filling up. And of course, it wouldn't be as much fun without a bottle of Kahlua next to the tub. | 12/31/2007 |
| Here you can look through an interior window in the bathroom, past the tub into the living area of the cabin with the fireplace. | 12/31/2007 |
| Alix caught the sun shining brightly through the trees during our snowshoe trek. | 12/31/2007 |
| The view from the bottom of the tram line looking up towards OHSU. | 11/10/2007 |
| The view of downtown from the tram on the way up to OHSU. | 11/10/2007 |
| Another shot from along the tram ride. Here you can see the Marquam Bridge. | 11/10/2007 |
| The view looking towards the OHSU terminal from halfway up the tram line. | 11/10/2007 |
| It's a little faint, but you should be able to make out Mt. Hood. | 11/10/2007 |
| Looking at the Willamette River and south Portland through the reflection on the tram. | 11/10/2007 |
| Another reflection of Portland in the tram. | 11/10/2007 |
| And another one, with the Marquam Bridge clearly visible. | 11/10/2007 |
| An incoming tram, as we look down the tram line from the top. You can also see many of the new towers that have goneup in the South Waterfront District in the past few years. | 11/10/2007 |
| Another view of an incoming tram, and the fall foliage. | 11/10/2007 |
| And one last shot of an incoming tram. | 11/10/2007 |
| Here's the next tram arriving at the terminal at the top. | 11/10/2007 |
| A cool bridge connecting two of the OHSU buildings. | 11/10/2007 |
| Welcome to OHSU. | 11/10/2007 |
| This is the gift shop in the hospital. There's something very ironic about the gift shop in a hospital being closed due to illness. | 11/10/2007 |
| Adam in the connecting bridge. | 11/10/2007 |
| "X" marks the spot. These "X"s line the bridge. | 11/10/2007 |
| A water fountain/sculpturte in the sculpture garden. | 11/10/2007 |
| Looking out over the sculpture garden towards the East side of Portland. | 11/10/2007 |
| The other side of that water fountain sculpture. | 11/10/2007 |
| "Looking at the future". Well, looking at the MArquam Bridge anyway. | 11/10/2007 |
| Adam and the arriving tram caught in a reflection off the building. | 11/10/2007 |
| The original OHSU building. | 11/10/2007 |
| An interesting sculpture of a Rabbit-man holding a greyhound. | 11/10/2007 |
| Here you can see two of the bridges that connect the various buildings. The one in the foreground connects OHSU to the tram terminal. | 11/10/2007 |
| A fountain in the sculpture garden. | 11/10/2007 |
| A close-up of the head of the Rabbit-Man. | 11/10/2007 |
| Adam and his sister Robin at the Japanese Gardens | 10/7/2007 |
| No, this is not a bus stop. It's Adam's mom, Aunt Iris, and sister Robin in an alcove at the Japanese Gardens in Portland. | 10/7/2007 |
| The Arbor at the Japanese Gardens. | 10/7/2007 |
| The classic shot of the bridge that everybody must take when they're at the Japanese Gardens. | 10/7/2007 |
| Just like when we were at Shore Acres State Park in Bandon, we found another Crunch Berry tree. Up until this year I never realized they grew on trees. | 10/7/2007 |
| Aunt Iris, Mom, Robin, and Adam on the bridge. | 10/7/2007 |
| A sculpture of lions at the Japanese Gardens. | 10/7/2007 |
| The top of a Pagoda at the Japanese Gardens. | 10/7/2007 |
| Adam enjoying the scenery, with Iris and Robin further down the path. | 10/7/2007 |
| There's Adam again at the bottom of one of the paths. | 10/7/2007 |
| Another path in the Japanese Gardens. | 10/7/2007 |
| the pond and heron sculptures. | 10/7/2007 |
| A beautiful red tree in the Japanese Gardens. We were there on October 7th, and we may have been a week or two early from the best fall foliage. But it was still very nice. | 10/7/2007 |
| Another shot of the red tree, with some other trees nearby for some perspective. | 10/7/2007 |
| One of the sand and stone gardens. I really like this shot. | 10/7/2007 |
| You can see the background foliage better in this photo, but the sand garden is less clear. | 10/7/2007 |
| Another shot of the sand and stone garden, from a slightly different angle. | 10/7/2007 |
| This one is interesting with the silhouettes. From left to right, that's Iris, Robin, and my mom. | 10/7/2007 |
| A sculpture at the Japanese Gardens. | 10/7/2007 |
| One of the many water features. | 10/7/2007 |
| The waterfall at the Japanese Gardens. | 10/7/2007 |
| A nice shot of the waterfall at the Japanese Gardens. | 10/7/2007 |
| Look closely and you can see a Green Heron in the middle of the photo. We've seen him a couple of times while canoeing on the Tualatin River. | 10/27/2007 |
| You can really see the heron in this photo. | 10/27/2007 |
| Here he is again. | 10/27/2007 |
| This is a great shot of the Green Heron. | 10/27/2007 |
| And this one is my favorite Green Heron shot. He really stands out with the background foliage. | 10/27/2007 |
| Here he is again on our way back downstream. He turned around, so you can see he is indeed alive. | 10/27/2007 |
| Here he is again somewhat camoflaged in the middle of the picture. | 10/27/2007 |
| Here we are on a canoe trip in late October 2007. This is the view Alix typically has from the back of the canoe. | 10/27/2007 |
| Some very nice fall foliage during our canoe trip. | 10/27/2007 |
| This one has a nice reflection of the foliage. | 10/27/2007 |
| Another one of Adam and the reflection. | 10/27/2007 |
| Here's a really nice photo of the foliage and reflection in the Tualatin River. | 10/27/2007 |
| And another one with some evergreens in the background. | 10/27/2007 |
| Tualatin means "sluggish water" in the native American language. You can see this river was well-named. | 10/27/2007 |
| Some bright yellow foliae on the way back downstream. | 10/27/2007 |
| A similar shot of Adam and the foliage. (sounds like the name of a band) | 10/27/2007 |
| Here's a kayaker joining us on the Tualatin River. | 10/27/2007 |
| Alix and I went for a hike at Latourelle Falls in the Columbia River Gorge to take in the autumn foliage on Oct 21/2006. Here's Adam looking up at the leaves, with Mazama in the background. | 10/21/2006 |
| Here's a bright yellow tree at the picnic area at Latourelle Falls. | 10/21/2006 |
| On the hike at Latourelle Falls, we came across this oddly-shaped tree, which Mazama was kind enough to pose under. | 10/21/2006 |
| Here is a better angle of the tree, and you can really see the weird shape. | 10/21/2006 |
| It was such a clear day, we drove up to Larch Mountain to check out the view. Here you can see from left to right Mount St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Adams. About an hour after we were there, the lava spine on Mount St. Helens collapsed, causing a large dust plume to rise 2000 feet above the rim. We just missed it! | 10/21/2006 |
| Here's a zoomed in look on Mt. Rainier from Larch Mountain. That's 97 miles away. | 10/21/2006 |
| Much closer is Mt. Hood. | 10/21/2006 |
| Another odd tree on the hike at Latourelle Falls was this split tree. Here's Adam, Mazama, and Ringo posing under the tree. | 10/21/2006 |
| And another shot of the split tree. | 10/21/2006 |
| I took a trip to Cannon Beach back in early March, 2006. It was right after we had an unusually cold storm move through, and snow fell in many areas of NW Oregon, including right down to sea level. You can still see some snow in the hills behind cannon Beach here. | 3/11/2006 |
| Another shot of Cannon Beach. | 3/11/2006 |
| A silhouette of a beautiful tree near Cannon Beach. | 3/11/2006 |
| The same tree with a slightly different look. | 3/11/2006 |
| The weather was very spring-like while I was out there. Some showers with very ominous skies, followed by clear blue skies. At one point there was a beautiful rainbow, and a nearly full moon inside the rainbow. | 3/11/2006 |
| My camera does not have a wide enough angle to capture the whole rainbow, but here's another shot of the moon inside the rainbow. | 3/11/2006 |
| And one more of the Moon-Rainbow photos. | 3/11/2006 |
| A few miles south of Tillamook is a beautiful waterfall just a couple of miles inland from 101. | 3/11/2006 |
| Here you can really see the snow that was on the trail. Even if you don't like hiking, the trail to the waterfall is really short - probably around 1/4 mile. And it's pretty flat - a very easy walk. | 3/11/2006 |
| One last shot of Munson Creek Falls. | 3/11/2006 |
| It's called Munson Creek Falls, and it's definitely worth a slight detour if you're in the area. | 3/11/2006 |
| Again, notice the snow that was still on the ground. I've never been here before, but I suspect the snow was somewhat unusual. | 3/11/2006 |
| Another shot of Munson Creek Falls. | 3/11/2006 |
| And another. | 3/11/2006 |
| This is the first of several photos of a huge and fascinating tree in Ecola State Park. | 3/12/2006 |
| Another shot of the tree. Notice the two large branches on the left, and then look at the next shot. | 3/12/2006 |
| Here's a close-up of those branches. Those are ferns growing on them, probably forty feet up in the air. | 3/12/2006 |
| One more shot of the tree. | 3/12/2006 |
| A shot looking back towards Cannon Beach from Ecola State Park. You can see Haystack Rock through the trees inthe right half of the photo. | 3/12/2006 |
| A similar shot to the one above. | 3/12/2006 |
| Another shot of "Tilly" from a different angle at Ecola State Park. | 3/12/2006 |
| And one more. I really liked the way it looked from this angle. | 3/12/2006 |
| One last shot of the Tillamook lighthouse from this spot. | 3/12/2006 |
| Old Tilly - the Tillamook lighthouse from Ecola State Park. | 3/12/2006 |
| The view looking down from the headlands at Ecola State Park. | 3/12/2006 |
| We took a daytrip up to Lost Lake, a few miles NW of Mt. Hood last week to try and get away from the heat in the valley. | 7/17/2005 |
| Here's another shot of Lost Lake with Mt. Hood. | 7/17/2005 |
| I had always wanted to visit the Columbia River Gorge when it was mostly frozen. After this year's storm, I finally had the chance. Unfortunately, the historic Columbia River Gorge Scenic Highway was closed, so the only waterfall that I could get access to was Multnomah Falls, since there is an exit for viewing it right on I-84 (which was also closed for about 2 days during the storm!) | 1/14/2004 |
| Another shot of a mostly frozen Multnomah Falls. I wish I could have seen the rest of the waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge. I'm sure they all would have been just as nice. | 1/14/2004 |
| An interesting angle looking up at the top of Multnomah Falls. Even the path to the bridge was closed because eveything was so slippery. | 1/14/2004 |
| A spouting horn in Cape Perpetua, just south of Yachats. Yachats is a great little town on the central coast. It's one of my three favorite coast towns, along with Bandon and Cannon Beach. | 9/15/2003 |
| A spectacular tree in Cape Perpetua, on the short walk down to the beach. | 9/15/2003 |
