CapeKiwanda2.jpg Looking back at Cape Kiwanda from the south.6/29/2008
CapeMeares.jpg We drove home along the Three Capes Loop, and stopped at Cape Meares. While it was in the upper 90's at home, here at Cape Meares we had all out outerwear on and were still cold. It was probably in the upper 50's, with a strong wind and a light rain/mist that made it feel particualrily cold. I'd still prefer this to the temepratures we were having back in the Portland area.6/29/2008
CoastTrees.jpg Some downed trees near the Octopus Tree. We had a fierce winter storm last winter, that blew down thousands of trees along the coast. You can also see the effect of the wind and salt blowing off the ocean in the trees still standing, it looks like they are leaning away from the ocean.6/29/2008
DogTracks.jpg The tracks of Mazama running back to his master on a beautiful day at Cape Kiwanda.6/29/2008
LancetFish1.jpg While on the beach, we saw what we first thought was a barracuda washed up on the shore. It was alive, but struggling to survive. And we were having a hard time believing that barracudas were this far north.6/29/2008
LancetFish2.jpg We found out after we got home that there have been Lancetfish washing up on shore this year, and that's what this was. This one was close to two feet long, with many sharp teeth that made us wary of getting near him.6/29/2008
LancetFish3.jpg Some people tried to help it back into the water. They briefly succeeded before the next wave deposited the lancetfish right back on shore. Shortly after that he died from apparent exhaustion. He seemed close to death from the moment we found him.6/29/2008

Snowshoe2.jpg Here's some of the heavy snow we were hiking through.12/31/2007
Snowshoe3.jpg Looking through the trees at one of the Cascade mountains. It could be Mt. Bachelor.12/31/2007
SpaTub1.jpg Our spa in our cabin filled up from a faucet in the ceiling. Actually it wasn't even a faucet, it was just a hole in the ceiling.12/31/2007
SpaTub2.jpg A closeup of the water coming out of the ceiling to fill up the spa tub.12/31/2007
SpaTub3.jpg You can really see the droplets of water filling up the tub in this shot. 12/31/2007
SpaTub4.jpg You can see the entire length of the flow in this photo.12/31/2007
SpaTub5.jpg the tub is slowly filling up. And of course, it wouldn't be as much fun without a bottle of Kahlua next to the tub.12/31/2007
SpaTub6.jpg Here you can look through an interior window in the bathroom, past the tub into the living area of the cabin with the fireplace.12/31/2007

Incoming2.jpg Another view of an incoming tram, and the fall foliage.11/10/2007
Incoming3.jpg And one last shot of an incoming tram.11/10/2007

Bridge1.jpg A cool bridge connecting two of the OHSU buildings.11/10/2007
OHSU.jpg Welcome to OHSU.11/10/2007
Closed.jpg This is the gift shop in the hospital. There's something very ironic about the gift shop in a hospital being closed due to illness.11/10/2007
Bridge2.jpg Adam in the connecting bridge.11/10/2007
BridgeX.jpg "X" marks the spot. These "X"s line the bridge.11/10/2007

Pond.jpg the pond and heron sculptures.10/7/2007
RedTree1.jpg A beautiful red tree in the Japanese Gardens. We were there on October 7th, and we may have been a week or two early from the best fall foliage. But it was still very nice.10/7/2007
RedTree2.jpg Another shot of the red tree, with some other trees nearby for some perspective.10/7/2007
SandGarden1.jpg One of the sand and stone gardens. I really like this shot.10/7/2007
SandGarden2.jpg You can see the background foliage better in this photo, but the sand garden is less clear.10/7/2007
SandGarden3.jpg Another shot of the sand and stone garden, from a slightly different angle.10/7/2007
SandGarden4.jpg This one is interesting with the silhouettes. From left to right, that's Iris, Robin, and my mom.10/7/2007

Waterfall1.jpg The waterfall at the Japanese Gardens.10/7/2007
Waterfall2.jpg A nice shot of the waterfall at the Japanese Gardens.10/7/2007
GreenHeron1.jpg Look closely and you can see a Green Heron in the middle of the photo. We've seen him a couple of times while canoeing on the Tualatin River.10/27/2007
GreenHeron2.jpg You can really see the heron in this photo.10/27/2007
GreenHeron3.jpg Here he is again.10/27/2007
GreenHeron4.jpg This is a great shot of the Green Heron.10/27/2007
GreenHeron5.jpg And this one is my favorite Green Heron shot. He really stands out with the background foliage.10/27/2007
GreenHeron6.jpg Here he is again on our way back downstream. He turned around, so you can see he is indeed alive.10/27/2007
GreenHeron7.jpg Here he is again somewhat camoflaged in the middle of the picture.10/27/2007
Tualatin1.jpg Here we are on a canoe trip in late October 2007. This is the view Alix typically has from the back of the canoe.10/27/2007
Tualatin10.jpg Some very nice fall foliage during our canoe trip.10/27/2007
Tualatin2.jpg This one has a nice reflection of the foliage.10/27/2007
Tualatin3.jpg Another one of Adam and the reflection.10/27/2007
Tualatin4.jpg Here's a really nice photo of the foliage and reflection in the Tualatin River.10/27/2007
Tualatin5.jpg And another one with some evergreens in the background.10/27/2007
Tualatin6.jpg Tualatin means "sluggish water" in the native American language. You can see this river was well-named.10/27/2007
Tualatin7.jpg Some bright yellow foliae on the way back downstream.10/27/2007
Tualatin8.jpg A similar shot of Adam and the foliage. (sounds like the name of a band)10/27/2007
Tualatin9.jpg Here's a kayaker joining us on the Tualatin River.10/27/2007
AdamPark3.jpg Alix and I went for a hike at Latourelle Falls in the Columbia River Gorge to take in the autumn foliage on Oct 21/2006. Here's Adam looking up at the leaves, with Mazama in the background.10/21/2006
Autumn1.jpg Here's a bright yellow tree at the picnic area at Latourelle Falls.10/21/2006
BentTree1.jpg On the hike at Latourelle Falls, we came across this oddly-shaped tree, which Mazama was kind enough to pose under.10/21/2006
BentTree4.jpg Here is a better angle of the tree, and you can really see the weird shape.10/21/2006
LarchMtn1.jpg It was such a clear day, we drove up to Larch Mountain to check out the view. Here you can see from left to right Mount St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Adams. About an hour after we were there, the lava spine on Mount St. Helens collapsed, causing a large dust plume to rise 2000 feet above the rim. We just missed it!10/21/2006
LarchMtn3.jpg Here's a zoomed in look on Mt. Rainier from Larch Mountain. That's 97 miles away.10/21/2006
LarchMtn6.jpg Much closer is Mt. Hood.10/21/2006
SplitTree2.jpg Another odd tree on the hike at Latourelle Falls was this split tree. Here's Adam, Mazama, and Ringo posing under the tree.10/21/2006
SplitTree3.jpg And another shot of the split tree.10/21/2006
CannonBeach1.jpg I took a trip to Cannon Beach back in early March, 2006. It was right after we had an unusually cold storm move through, and snow fell in many areas of NW Oregon, including right down to sea level. You can still see some snow in the hills behind cannon Beach here.3/11/2006
CannonBeach5.jpg Another shot of Cannon Beach.3/11/2006
CannonBeach7.jpg A silhouette of a beautiful tree near Cannon Beach.3/11/2006
CannonBeach8.jpg The same tree with a slightly different look.3/11/2006
MoonRainbow1.jpg The weather was very spring-like while I was out there. Some showers with very ominous skies, followed by clear blue skies. At one point there was a beautiful rainbow, and a nearly full moon inside the rainbow.3/11/2006
MoonRainbow2.jpg My camera does not have a wide enough angle to capture the whole rainbow, but here's another shot of the moon inside the rainbow.3/11/2006
MoonRainbow4.jpg And one more of the Moon-Rainbow photos.3/11/2006
MunsonCreek1.jpg A few miles south of Tillamook is a beautiful waterfall just a couple of miles inland from 101.3/11/2006
MunsonCreek10.jpg Here you can really see the snow that was on the trail. Even if you don't like hiking, the trail to the waterfall is really short - probably around 1/4 mile. And it's pretty flat - a very easy walk.3/11/2006
MunsonCreek13.jpg One last shot of Munson Creek Falls.3/11/2006
MunsonCreek2.jpg It's called Munson Creek Falls, and it's definitely worth a slight detour if you're in the area.3/11/2006
MunsonCreek6.jpg Again, notice the snow that was still on the ground. I've never been here before, but I suspect the snow was somewhat unusual.3/11/2006
MunsonCreek7.jpg Another shot of Munson Creek Falls.3/11/2006
MunsonCreek8.jpg And another.3/11/2006
Ecola12.jpg This is the first of several photos of a huge and fascinating tree in Ecola State Park.3/12/2006
Ecola15.jpg Another shot of the tree. Notice the two large branches on the left, and then look at the next shot.3/12/2006
Ecola16.jpg Here's a close-up of those branches. Those are ferns growing on them, probably forty feet up in the air.3/12/2006
Ecola18.jpg One more shot of the tree.3/12/2006
Ecola20.jpg A shot looking back towards Cannon Beach from Ecola State Park. You can see Haystack Rock through the trees inthe right half of the photo.3/12/2006
Ecola24.jpg A similar shot to the one above.3/12/2006
Ecola30.jpg Another shot of "Tilly" from a different angle at Ecola State Park.3/12/2006
Ecola31.jpg And one more. I really liked the way it looked from this angle.3/12/2006
Ecola32.jpg One last shot of the Tillamook lighthouse from this spot.3/12/2006
Ecola7.jpg Old Tilly - the Tillamook lighthouse from Ecola State Park.3/12/2006
Ecola8.jpg The view looking down from the headlands at Ecola State Park.3/12/2006
LostLake1.jpg We took a daytrip up to Lost Lake, a few miles NW of Mt. Hood last week to try and get away from the heat in the valley.7/17/2005
LostLake2.jpg Here's another shot of Lost Lake with Mt. Hood.7/17/2005
Multnomah1.jpg I had always wanted to visit the Columbia River Gorge when it was mostly frozen. After this year's storm, I finally had the chance. Unfortunately, the historic Columbia River Gorge Scenic Highway was closed, so the only waterfall that I could get access to was Multnomah Falls, since there is an exit for viewing it right on I-84 (which was also closed for about 2 days during the storm!)1/14/2004
Multnomah2.jpg Another shot of a mostly frozen Multnomah Falls. I wish I could have seen the rest of the waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge. I'm sure they all would have been just as nice.1/14/2004
Multnomah3.jpg An interesting angle looking up at the top of Multnomah Falls. Even the path to the bridge was closed because eveything was so slippery.1/14/2004
SpoutingHorn.jpg A spouting horn in Cape Perpetua, just south of Yachats. Yachats is a great little town on the central coast. It's one of my three favorite coast towns, along with Bandon and Cannon Beach.9/15/2003
YachatsTree.jpg A spectacular tree in Cape Perpetua, on the short walk down to the beach.9/15/2003
