AvalancheLake1.jpg Our 1st hike on our 1st full day in Glacier was a ranger-led hike to Avalanche Lake. This was a beautiful mountain lake surrounded on three sides by towering slopes and waterfalls feeding into it. Over the next week we realized this was a recurring theme in many of the lakes we saw.6/24/2001
AvalancheLake2.jpg Another view of Avalanche Lake, with a nice reflection.6/24/2001
McDonaldCreek.jpg McDonald Creek was a nice river that fed into McDonald Lake where we stayed for two days. We saw several water ouzels flying up and down this river.6/24/2001
SnowRoad.jpg It's June 24th (actually it was the 25th, the camera was off by one day on the timestamp. All the pictures in Glacier are off by one day), but there's still a significant amount of snow in places near the Pass. We hiked up at Logan Pass, and we were pelted by a cold snow "pellets" in a rather fierce wind.6/24/2001
Bluff.jpg From the same hike as the above shot.6/25/2001
GoingToSun.jpg The view from our drive on the Going-to-the-Sun Road. We were going over the pass to the Eastern side and then up into Waterton Lakes National Park, the Canadian park that adjoins Glacier.6/25/2001
StMaryLake1.jpg Here we have St Mary Lake, now that we're over the pass and on the Eastern side of the Rockies.6/25/2001
StMaryLake2.jpg Another view of St. Mary's Lake.6/25/2001
StMaryRiver.jpg From our hike to St.Mary Falls and Virginia Falls. This is the St. Mary River heading towards the lake of the same name.6/25/2001
VirginiaCreek.jpg Adam and Halli on that same hike. I believe this is next to Virginia Creek.6/25/2001
Waterfall.jpg A waterfall that ducks under the road on the way up to Logan Pass.6/25/2001
BighornSheep.jpg There were almost twenty bighorn sheep in this parking lot at Red Rock Canyon in Waterton. We were pleased to see most people were not feeding them, rather they were shooing them away. When we left later that day, the herd was traveling with us along the road back towards Waterton Village. Note that there are no adult males here - they keep to themselves.6/26/2001
Moose.jpg This moose we saw at Kootenai Lakes in Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada. There was actually a family of three there, but the mother and baby were too far away for a picture.6/26/2001
RedRockCanyon.jpg Here is a view of the aptly named Red Rock Canyon.6/26/2001
Where.jpg Hmmm. Where was this? Possibly part of the same hike.6/26/2001
ManyGlacier.jpg Took this on the drive towards Many Glacier Hotel.6/27/2001
Canyon.jpg Looking back across a canyon to waterfall and the river leading to it.6/28/2001
IcebergLake1.jpg Iceberg Lake. According to the ranger who led our hike, this was the first day of the season that icebergs appeared.6/28/2001
IcebergLake2.jpg Another view of Iceberg Lake.6/28/2001
IcebergLakeTrail.jpg Some wildflowers along our hike to Iceberg Lake. The streaks of snow in the distance is where the our destination was.6/28/2001
ManyGlacierDawn.jpg This was taken at dawn from Many Glacier Hotel, looking across the lake.6/28/2001
PtarmiganLake1.jpg On the way back from Iceberg Lake we took a detour up a very steep trail to Ptarmigan Lake. This was by far our longest total hike ever. Combined, we hiked 13 miles with an elevation gain of 2200 feet. Wow! What a day!6/28/2001
PtarmiganLake2.jpg Another shot of Ptarmigan Lake. If you look closely, you can see the trail continues across the lake. Look for a trail starting on the left and sloping up towards the right before switchbacking. This trail (which we did not take) eventually led to a tunnel and continued on towards the Canadian portion of the park.6/28/2001
Wildflowers1.jpg More wildies on our journey to Iceberg Lake.6/28/2001
Wildflowers2.jpg Still more wildflowers from todays hikes.6/28/2001
ManyGlacierHotel.jpg Our hotel (Many Glacier Hotel) from across the lake. Beautiful on the outside, a little lacking on the inside. Our room was in the basement, and we don't think it's been updated since the hotel was built. Ever see the Shining? Remember the coiled up firehoses? We had those along our hallway - very creepy.6/29/2001
Wildflowers3.jpg One last shot of some wildflowers from our wonderful trip.6/29/2001
