 Goodbye, Halli

Halli was a very important individual in our lives; she was a daughter much more than a daughter-in-law.

We got to know Halli when she was dating Adam, many years ago. We always enjoyed her company, her intellect, and her wit. Indeed, one of the happiest days in our lives is when Adam announced his engagement on what was Fathers’ Day.

Adam and Halli’s wedding was, for the two of us, the classiest and most beautiful wedding we had ever experienced. The event was well-planned and executed “to a t.”

When Adam announced that the two of them were moving to Oregon, we knew that we’d sorely miss them both, and we did. We watched their Northwest flight as it took off from White Plains, tears in our eyes.

From that point on, we’d have memorable phone calls with Adam and Halli. The Adam conversations would be succinct and short (sorry, Adam), while the conversations with Halli were deep, probing, and upbeat – we’ll really miss those talks.

Halli made exquisite, hand-made greeting cards. They were each very special and very thoughtful. We saved each one – they were works of art.

In 2005, Adam and Halli traveled to Newburyport for John’s retirement party. They were in Newburyport for quite a few special family gatherings. The fact that the two of them made this extra effort to be with John at that important time is something he’ll always remember.

2007 is a year we’d like to soon forget. The (January) news about Halli’s tumor was devastating and surreal for us. We kept praying, kept hoping for a miracle which never came. God must have a special garden which needs tending and that must have been the reason for her early calling.

In any event, we know that Halli is in a better place and, as John whispered in her ear in the hospice… “Save us a good seat.”
